Why does February only have 28 days?
Every year in late January, those of us dreaming of warmer weather start to count down the days until February. We recognize that the shortest month of the year is the only one which offers 28 days, yet we can't help but feel a bit short-changed when it's over almost as quickly as it started!
The answer for why February only has 28 days lies with an ancient Roman astronomer and mathematician by the name of Sosigenes – he was tasked with devising a calendar for Julius Caesar in 46BC. Despite revamping the calendar and adding an extra day to certain months, he decided to stick to his guns and let February stick with just four weeks and twenty-eight days.
It's possible that Sosigenes felt this was necessary in order to keep balance with the other months - after all, who wouldn't want all twelve months to get an equal slice of the pie?
