Who invented the pizza?
According to legend, pizza was invented by a Neapolitan chef named Raffaelle Esposito in 1889.
The hero of the day constructed his invention by combining features from two existing street foods - focaccia and flatbreads - to create the renowned Italian specialty known as pizza. It's said that he topped the creation with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and other ingredients to mimic the colors of Italy's national flag, which no doubt appealed to royal guests at a dinner party thrown in honor of King Umberto I and Queen Margherita. Talk about an ideal ingredient combo!
Who knew then that this delicious dish would become such a timeless classic? From pies with thick crusts and light toppings to thin crusts with extra cheese oozing out of every corner: it appears pizza really does know how to please everyone.
