We know how it usually goes - new year, same old resolutions. But what was happening on the year 1 (1 AD)? Was there a countdown? Did someone make a toast? Let's dive into this time capsule and uncover what the world looked like back then.

The year 1 AD may be one of the most debated years in history. It's the year that marks a major transition in the timeline of human civilization, but it's also a year shrouded in mystery and intrigue. So, what really happened in 1 AD? Let's take a look back and try to uncover some of the secrets from this pivotal time period.

The Birth of Jesus Christ

One of the biggest events to occur during this time period was, of course, the birth of Jesus Christ. Although there is no definitive proof as to when Jesus was actually born (most historians believe it was around 6-4 BC), he is widely believed to have been born in 1 AD. This is because early Christians chose to place his birth at this time period when they were first calculating their calendar system. As such, many Christian holidays are still celebrated on dates relative to this assumption.

The Roman Empire is Established

Another major event that took place during 1 AD was the official establishment of the Roman Empire by Emperor Augustus Caesar. In 27 BC, Augustus had declared himself "Princeps," or ruler, and solidified his power over Rome and its territories. By 1 AD, he had firmly established himself as one of Rome’s most powerful rulers and expanded the boundaries of its influence significantly. During his reign, Rome enjoyed unprecedented levels of peace and prosperity which would last until 68 AD when Nero assumed power and brought chaos back into Rome's existence.

The Calendar Change-up

No one knows exactly why or when the calendar changed from BC (Before Christ) to AD (Anno Domini). Some speculate that Dionysius Exiguus was responsible for introducing this change when he created his Easter table around 525 AD. Others think that Bede may have been behind it when he published his Ecclesiastical History of England around 731 AD. Whomever made this happen is responsible for us counting years like we do today!

The Emergence of Chinese Literature

1AD also saw a new era for Chinese literature emerge with the publication of “The Classic Of Poetry” by Qu Yuan (or Chu Yuan). This collection contains 305 poems from various authors from both ancient times and more recent eras that highlight different aspects of Chinese culture such as religion and philosophy. It still remains an important part of Chinese literary culture today and has been used throughout history as an important teaching tool for students learning about Chinese culture and tradition.
